Under sunny autumnal skies, hundreds of people ventured to UCSF Mission Bay on October 28 for a festive celebration of the remarkable progress made since the 1999 groundbreaking.

For many, it was their first visit to the eagerly anticipated community center, a contemporary centerpiece of the 43-acre campus that achieves a unique architectural blend of space, light and color and serves as the campus hub for recreation and socialization.
Campus Architect Steve Wiesenthal explains the inspiration of this new landmark and the significance of its role bridging the campus with the community.

During the special celebration, many enjoyed a barbecue lunch alfresco amid the upbeat sounds of steel drums, tours of the community center and campus housing complex and talks by scientists and staff during a few hours off on a Friday afternoon.
The successful event was organized by a campuswide planning team convened by Stella Hsu, associate vice chancellor of Campus Life Services, and Barbara French, associate vice chancellor for University Relations, in part to serve as an official welcoming party to the community as well as to thank the numerous faculty, staff and students who helped make UCSF Mission Bay a reality.
